Peniche is a backpacker-friendly city because it is an economical and a very interesting destination.

The Algarve's capital has a more distinctly Portuguese feel than most resort towns. Many visitors only pass through this underrated city, which is a pity, as it makes for an enjoyable stopover. It has an attractive marina, well-maintained parks and plazas, and a picturesque cidade velha (old town) ringed by medieval walls. It is a fairy tale village. Many palaces and farms. Nature and many walks to do. Is a green mountainscape of palaces, country estates, parks and a medieval castle and the Palace of Sintra. In the 19th century Sintra became the first centre of European Romantic architecture. Ferdinand II turned a ruined monastery into a castle where this new sensitivity was displayed in the use of Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish and Renaissance elements and in the creation of a park blending local and exotic species of trees.

8º Other cities

Aveiro is known as the Venice of Portugal. It has beautiful architecture and excellent traditional sweets. 

If you head toward the most southwestern point in mainland Europe, you will inevitably pass through the town of Sagres.

With an incredible link to Portuguese history, glorious beaches, cliffs, and ocean views, Sagres is a must-see location during your Algarve holiday. 

On the coast not far from Coimbra, Figueira da Foz is a resort city with a casino, bars restaurants and an enormous urban beach.
